The film that bent reality
The Matrix was written and directed by the Wachowskis and released in 1999. Its mind-bending premise: the world we think is real is actually a giant computer simulation built by machines, and a hacker called Neo is freed to join the fight against them in the 'real world'.
It was as influential for how it looked as for what it said. The film's invention of 'bullet time' — where the camera sweeps around an action frozen in slow motion — was copied everywhere for years afterwards, and its mix of philosophy, kung-fu and cyberpunk style spawned a whole series of sequels.
