From theme-park ride to blockbuster
Here's a fun twist: the films were inspired by a Disney theme-park ride of the same name, rather than the other way round. The first movie, The Curse of the Black Pearl, sailed into cinemas in 2003, directed by Gore Verbinski and produced by the blockbuster king Jerry Bruckheimer.
Few expected a pirate film to be a hit — but Johnny Depp's wobbly, scene-stealing Captain Jack Sparrow (a performance that earned an Oscar nomination) made it a sensation. It grew into a five-film series of supernatural high-seas adventures, full of cursed gold, ghostly crews and double-crosses.
