Mission: Impossible began as a 1960s television spy series — the source of that self-destructing message and the unmistakable Lalo Schifrin theme tune. The film series launched in 1996, directed first by Brian De Palma, with Tom Cruise as super-agent Ethan Hunt of the Impossible Missions Force.
What sets the films apart is that Cruise famously performs his own jaw-dropping stunts: scaling the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, clinging to the side of a plane as it takes off, and leaping from cliffs on a motorbike.
