Each puzzle pulls a fresh rota from the list, so the workforce changes every time you play — a gentle first shift on Easy, and a full working week once the diagonals and backwards words appear on Hard. One round you're tracking an ENGINEER across the middle; the next a backwards SURGEON is tucked along the edge.
A classroom essential
Jobs and 'people who help us' are a cornerstone of early-years learning, which makes this one of our most useful classroom puzzles. The grid spreads across the whole world of work: the makers and fixers, like the TAILOR, MECHANIC and MINER; the people who design and build, from the ARCHITECT and ENGINEER to the DESIGNER; and the thinkers, writers and decision-makers, from the AUTHOR, ARTIST and EDITOR to the LAWYER, JUDGE and BANKER. Who keeps the world running?
A fun question to ask a class is: how many different people did it take to get your breakfast to the table? A farmer grew it, a driver delivered it, a CASHIER sold it, and an ENGINEER kept the power on so the fridge worked — and that's before you count everyone who built the road, the shop and the lorry. Almost nothing in daily life is the work of just one person, which is the big idea behind the 'people who help us' topic: jobs all connect, like a giant team.
Jobs also change with the times in ways children find surprising. Some, like the TAILOR, the MINER and the CHEF, have existed in some form for thousands of years; others, like roles working with computers, didn't exist when their own grandparents were young — and some jobs of the future haven't been invented yet. Many take years of training: a SURGEON studies for the better part of a decade, while a MECHANIC or electrician learns hands-on through an apprenticeship. Talking about all this turns a jobs word search into a great springboard for 'what do you want to be?'
