It's a great question to put to a class: why do some names last for centuries? Often it's because the person changed how everyone after them lived or thought. NEWTON and EINSTEIN rewrote our understanding of the universe; PASTEUR worked out that invisible germs cause disease, an idea that has saved countless lives; EDISON and the WRIGHT brothers turned 'impossible' ideas into the light bulb and the aeroplane. Their discoveries outlived them, so their names did too.
Others are remembered for courage rather than inventions. GANDHI and MANDELA changed whole nations through peaceful resistance, showing that you don't need an army to move the world.
