Because clay survives so well, we can still read their school exercises, shopping lists, laws and even the oldest story ever recorded, the Epic of Gilgamesh, thousands of years later.
The reason civilisation sprang up here is the two rivers. The TIGRIS and EUPHRATES flooded the land with rich mud, and once people dug the first CANAL to control that water, FARMING could feed far more mouths than before — so the world's first true CITY could grow. With cities came kings, TRADE, the WHEEL for carts and pottery, and written law: King HAMMURABI of BABYLON had his famous code of rules carved in stone for all to see, an idea at the root of legal systems ever since.
