The BLACK DEATH was a terrible PLAGUE that swept through MEDIEVAL EUROPE, and this puzzle gathers the story. You'll be finding the DISEASE itself, the RATS and FLEAS that carried it from town to town, the painful BUBOES that gave the plague its name, and the way it SPREAD along busy TRADE routes.
Because every new puzzle reshuffles the grid, no two Black Death word searches are the same. One round a backwards PANDEMIC hides in a corner; the next a diagonal QUARANTINE appears across the middle.
Life and death in the Middle Ages
People had little defence against the SICKNESS, and the words are here. The plague DOCTOR wore a strange beaked MASK, a MONK prayed for the FEVER to pass, and whole families fell ill. Carried by SHIP and along the roads, the PANDEMIC reached every VILLAGE; the dead were taken away by CART for BURIAL, and a lucky SURVIVOR lived to tell the tale. The idea of QUARANTINE — keeping the sick apart — comes from these very years.
