Sorting the real pirates from the legend
The Golden Age of Piracy ran roughly from the 1650s to the 1720s, when thousands of real outlaws preyed on merchant ships across the Caribbean and beyond. BLACKBEARD — actually Edward Teach — was the most feared of all, and built his terrifying image on purpose, reportedly tucking slow-burning fuses under his hat so he'd loom out of the smoke. Yet for all his menace, there's little evidence he ever actually killed a captive: terror alone usually made a CREW surrender without a fight.
A lot of 'pirate' lore is myth. Walking the PLANK and big chests of buried TREASURE were mostly invented by later novels and films — real pirates spent their loot fast rather than burying it. But some surprising parts are true: many pirate ships ran by a written code where the CREW voted on their CAPTAIN and shared the BOOTY remarkably fairly, far more equally than the navy or merchant ships of the day. Separating those facts from the storybook version is exactly what makes pirates a fun way into a history topic on the age of sail and exploration.
