There's the SPYGLASS, the STOCKADE ashore, blind PEW tapping down the road, BLACKDOG at the door, the little CORACLE, a rolling BARREL of apples, and a BUCCANEER left MAROONED.
The book that invented the pirate
Almost everything we picture when we say 'pirate' comes from this one book. Robert Louis STEVENSON wrote Treasure Island in 1883 after sketching a MAP of an imaginary island to amuse his young stepson, then inventing a story to go with it. From his imagination came the map marked with an X, the one-legged sea-cook with a parrot on his shoulder, the black spot, and pirates singing about a dead man's chest — none of which were really historical, but all of which feel 'true' now because Treasure Island made them so.
Long John SILVER is also one of literature's great villains precisely because he isn't all bad — he's charming, brave and genuinely fond of Jim HAWKINS even while plotting against him, which makes him far more interesting than a simple baddie. Stevenson tells the whole adventure through Jim's eyes, an ordinary boy thrown among dangerous men, so young readers step straight into the danger with him. That mix of a cracking plot and a morally tangled villain is why it's been a set text and a pirate-day favourite for well over a century.
