The shape of a poem
Poetry has its own special language, and this word search gathers it. You'll be finding the building blocks — the RHYME and RHYTHM, the line-by-line VERSE, the STANZA that groups them, and the COUPLET and QUATRAIN within.
Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the list, so the page changes every time you play — gentle on Easy, and a Hard-mode verse once the diagonals and backwards words appear.
Forms and figures of speech
Poetry comes in many forms, and they're here. There's the three-line HAIKU, the fourteen-line SONNET, the funny LIMERICK, the story-telling BALLAD, the praising ODE, and the playful ACROSTIC. We've hidden the poet's tools too — the SIMILE and METAPHOR, the vivid IMAGERY, the steady METER and SYLLABLE count, the repeated REFRAIN, and the musical LYRIC — all collected by a POET into an ANTHOLOGY.
How the forms actually work
Once you know the rules, the words in this grid come alive. A HAIKU is a tiny Japanese poem of just three lines and seventeen SYLLABLEs (5, then 7, then 5), usually about nature. A LIMERICK is its cheeky cousin: five lines with a bouncing RHYTHM and a punchline ending. A SONNET stretches to fourteen lines and was the favourite form of Shakespeare, while a BALLAD tells a whole story in song-like VERSE, often with a REFRAIN that repeats like a chorus.
The poet's other tools are about painting pictures with words. A SIMILE compares two things using 'like' or 'as' ('as busy as a bee'), while a METAPHOR says one thing simply *is* another ('the classroom was a zoo') — both feed the vivid IMAGERY that makes a POEM stick in your head. Even the sneaky ACROSTIC is in here, where the first letter of each line spells out a hidden word down the side. Spot them all and you've basically revised a term's worth of English in one grid.
