The real bear behind the stories
Winnie the POOH was inspired by a real STUFFED BEAR. A.A. Milne wrote the stories for his son, Christopher ROBIN Milne, and most of the characters were the boy's actual nursery toys — the original PIGLET, EEYORE, KANGA, ROO and TIGGER still exist and live in a glass case in a New York library to this day. Even the name was borrowed: 'Winnie' came from a real black bear at London Zoo that Christopher loved to visit.
The Hundred Acre Wood is real too, in a way. It's based on Ashdown FOREST in Sussex, where the Milnes lived, and you can still walk the spot where Pooh and Christopher Robin invented the game of Poohsticks, dropping twigs off a bridge to see whose floats out first. That mix of a gentle, BLUSTERY-day world and characters with such clear feelings — anxious Piglet, gloomy Eeyore, bouncy Tigger — is why the books are a favourite for talking about emotions with very young readers.
