The books that made millions read
Harry Potter began in 1997 with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, written by J.K. Rowling, who famously sketched out the world on a delayed train and was turned down by a dozen publishers before one said yes. Seven books followed, and they did something rare: they got a whole generation of reluctant readers to devour 600-page novels for fun, then queue at midnight for the next one.
The series is built from details that reward close readers — the QUIDDITCH rules, the four HOGWARTS houses each with their own colours and animal, the Latin-flavoured SPELL names, and the slow reveal of every HORCRUX. That's also why it's such good spelling practice: names like HERMIONE, GRYFFINDOR and QUIDDITCH look tricky until you've hunted them down letter by letter, and suddenly they stick.
