The rhymes everyone knows
Nursery rhymes are often the first poems we ever learn, and this word search gathers the favourites. You'll be finding HUMPTY Dumpty on his WALL, JACK and JILL fetching a PAIL of water up the HILL, and TWINKLE twinkle little STAR shining above.

From Bo Peep to the cradle
The classic rhymes are packed with characters, and they're here. There's Little Miss MUFFET and her spider, Little Bo PEEP and her LAMB, MARY and her little lamb, the HICKORY dickory dock MOUSE that ran up the CLOCK, Jack be NIMBLE jumping the CANDLE, Peter the PUMPKIN eater, and rock-a-bye baby in the CRADLE. It's all part of the NURSERY RHYME tradition — hey DIDDLE diddle.
Older than they look
Many of these little rhymes are centuries old and were passed mouth to mouth long before anyone wrote them down — which is why HUMPTY Dumpty is never actually called an egg in the words, and 'Twinkle Twinkle Little STAR' borrows its tune from the same French melody Mozart once used. People love to hunt for hidden history in them, claiming 'Ring a Ring o' Roses' is about the plague or that Humpty was a cannon; most historians think those stories were invented later, but they show how much these verses have wormed into our imagination.
What really matters is what they do for young children. The strong RHYME and bouncy RHYTHM make sounds easy to hear and repeat, so rhymes like JACK and JILL or HICKORY dickory dock are a cornerstone of early phonics — children pick up patterns, new words and even counting almost without noticing. Acting them out, clapping the beats and spotting the words in a grid all build the listening skills that reading is later built on, which is why every nursery and reception class keeps them close.
