King Arthur Word Search

The once and future king. Our King Arthur word search hides the legend of CAMELOT, from the sword EXCALIBUR to the wizard MERLIN, in a grid of letters. Pick a difficulty and join the Knights of the Round Table.

The legend of Camelot

The tales of King ARTHUR are among the most famous legends ever told, and this word search gathers them. You'll be finding ARTHUR himself, who pulled the SWORD from the STONE, his magical blade EXCALIBUR, the wise WIZARD MERLIN, and the golden court of CAMELOT.

Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the list, so the legend changes every time you play β€” gentle on Easy, and a Hard-mode quest once the diagonals and backwards words appear.

Knights of the Round Table

Arthur's court was full of noble KNIGHTS, and they're here. Gathered at the ROUND TABLE are the brave LANCELOT, the pure GALAHAD and PERCIVAL, alongside Queen GUINEVERE and the traitor MORDRED. There's the QUEST for the holy GRAIL, a SQUIRE training for knighthood, a JOUST in the tournament, a DRAGON to slay, the THRONE to defend, and the magical isle of AVALON β€” a true LEGEND.

Where the legend came from

King ARTHUR may be rooted in a real war-leader who fought in Britain around 1,500 years ago, but almost everything we picture β€” CAMELOT, MERLIN, the sword EXCALIBUR, the QUEST for the GRAIL β€” was added by later writers over hundreds of years. Welsh tales, a medieval 'history' by Geoffrey of Monmouth, French romances that introduced LANCELOT, and finally Thomas Malory's 'Le Morte d'Arthur' in the 1400s each piled on new characters and adventures until the legend we know today took shape.

The famous ROUND TABLE carries a neat idea: it has no head, so no knight outranks another β€” a early symbol of fairness that still gets used as a phrase for equal discussion ('a round-table meeting'). Other touches were borrowed from real medieval life, like the JOUST and the SQUIRE working his way up to KNIGHT. That mix makes Arthur perfect for the classroom: you can enjoy the magic of MERLIN and the DRAGON while also asking the historian's question β€” which parts might be true, and which were simply too good a story to leave out?
