Land, sea, air — and how they got faster
Vehicles are really just clever answers to one question: how do we move people and things further and faster? For thousands of years the fastest thing on land was a horse, until the steam TRAIN of the 1800s suddenly let people travel further in a day than ever before. The CAR put that freedom on every street, and barely sixty years after the first powered PLANE wobbled into the air in 1903, rockets were carrying astronauts to the Moon — an astonishing leap in a single lifetime.
Each setting needs a different trick. A BOAT or SUBMARINE has to deal with water (a hull shaped to slip through it, or to float and sink on purpose); a PLANE and a HELICOPTER fight gravity with specially shaped wings and spinning blades; and a humble BICYCLE is famously the most efficient machine ever invented, turning more of your effort into distance than any engine. Now the big change is power — quiet electric motors replacing roaring engines on everything from the BUS to the CAR. That mix of history and how-things-work makes vehicles a brilliant early-years and STEM topic.
