Why a helicopter can do what planes can't
A plane needs a long runway and has to keep moving forward to stay up, but a HELICOPTER makes its own LIFT by spinning its ROTOR BLADES — they're really long, skinny wings whirling round and round, so the aircraft can rise straight up, HOVER in one spot, and even fly backwards or sideways. That's why a chopper can reach places nothing else can: a mountainside, a hospital roof, the deck of a ship, or a flood where there's nowhere to land at all.
There's one tricky problem to solve. As the big rotor spins one way, it tries to twist the whole body of the helicopter the other way — so most helicopters add a small TAIL rotor whose job is simply to push back and stop the cabin from spinning.
