How a sub dives and steers
A submarine is full of clever engineering, and the words are here. To DIVE, it floods the BALLAST tanks; to surface, it blows them clear. The PROPELLER drives it forward, the RUDDER steers, and SONAR listens for echoes in the dark where there's no light to see. Crews enter through a sealed HATCH, withstand huge PRESSURE at DEPTH, and some NAVY subs are NUCLEAR-powered for a very long VOYAGE. In wartime they fire the TORPEDO — but mostly they explore the silent OCEAN deep.
Living in a sealed metal tube
The clever heart of a SUBMARINE is the BALLAST tank. To sink, the sub lets seawater flood these tanks so it weighs more and slips below the surface; to rise, it blows the water out with compressed air so it floats again — the same trick a fish does with the air bladder inside its body. Steering up and down is done with little wings called hydroplanes, while the RUDDER turns it left and right.
Going deep brings two big problems: crushing PRESSURE and total darkness. The deeper you DIVE, the harder the OCEAN squeezes, which is why a sub needs a thick, rounded HULL that spreads the force evenly. And because almost no light reaches the DEEP, submarines 'see' with SONAR — sending out a sound 'ping' and listening for the echo to map what's around them, exactly how a dolphin or bat finds its way. A NUCLEAR-powered NAVY sub can even make its own air and water, so the CREW can stay submerged for months.
