Older than farming, and wired into us
The oldest known musical instruments are flutes carved from bird bone and mammoth ivory, found in caves in southern Germany and dated to roughly 40,000 years ago — older than farming, writing or the first cities. Their finger holes are spaced to play a scale, so they are clearly not first attempts. People had been working at this for a long time already.
Every human culture ever studied makes music of some kind. Not every one has wheels, writing or money. In one large study, listeners were played songs from dozens of societies they knew nothing about and could still tell, well above chance, which were lullabies, which were dance tunes and which were for healing — so something in how these songs are built travels between cultures without translation.
Keeping time with a BEAT is rarer than it looks. Most animals cannot do it at all; a few parrots can, and a cockatoo called Snowball became well known among scientists for dancing in time to pop songs and inventing his own moves. Human brains lock onto a pulse so readily that a strong TEMPO changes how fast people walk without them noticing.
Hospitals put that to work. Patients recovering from a stroke often walk more steadily to a RHYTHM, and people who have lost speech after a brain injury can sometimes still sing words they cannot say, because the brain handles a TUNE differently from a sentence.
Catching the sound
For most of history, hearing music meant being in the room where it happened. Writing it down came first: about a thousand years ago an Italian monk, Guido of Arezzo, worked out how to place NOTES on lines so a SINGER could learn a piece without ever hearing it, and the names do-re-mi come from the opening syllables of a hymn he taught with.
Capturing the sound itself took another eight centuries, and then everything accelerated: the RECORD, radio, the CD, and now streaming services that take in well over 100,000 new tracks a day. More music is uploaded in an afternoon than anyone could listen to in a lifetime.
The same ingredients every time
Underneath the genres, the parts are the same. A MELODY is the bit you hum. HARMONY is what happens when other NOTES sound alongside it. RHYTHM is how those sounds are spaced in time. A BAND, an ORCHESTRA and a producer alone in a STUDIO are all arranging the same three things.
The sub-topics here each take one corner — instruments, classical composers, pop stars, bands, and a dozen genres from jazz to K-pop — and what separates them is mostly which ingredient gets pushed to the front. Dance music leads with RHYTHM, opera with the voice, folk with the LYRICS.
Even the way we listen was shaped by practicalities. The ALBUM exists because a record could only hold so much and someone had to decide what went on it; the FESTIVAL exists because a BAND cannot visit every town; and the ENCORE exists because audiences kept refusing to go home.
