Jeff Kinney spent around eight years working on GREG HEFFLEY's world and first published it free online, one entry at a time, where it was read millions of times before any publisher took a chance on it. Kinney originally wrote it for adults — a comic look back at MIDDLE SCHOOL — but it found its real home with kids, and has now sold well over 250 million copies worldwide.
Its secret weapon is the format. By blending short JOURNAL entries with a CARTOON DOODLE on almost every page, the books look far less scary than a wall of text, which is exactly why they've coaxed so many reluctant readers into finishing a whole novel — and then asking for the next one.
