The Internet Word Search

Log on and start searching. Our internet word search gathers the words of the web, from WEBSITE and BROWSER to a strong WIFI signal. Pick a difficulty and dive online.

The world wide web, in one grid

The internet connects almost everything, and this word search gathers the words behind it. You'll be finding the basics β€” WEBSITE, BROWSER and EMAIL β€” the things that get you connected, from WIFI and the ROUTER to BROADBAND, and the everyday actions, from a SEARCH to a quick DOWNLOAD.

Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the list, so the words change every time you play β€” gentle on Easy, and a longer-word challenge once the diagonals and backwards words appear on Hard.

Getting connected, in the grid

The grid gathers the words of going online. There's the kit that connects you β€” WIFI, the ROUTER, a HOTSPOT and BROADBAND β€” the places you visit, a WEBSITE or WEBPAGE you reach through a BROWSER, and the things you do there: a SEARCH, a DOWNLOAD or UPLOAD, STREAMING a show, sending EMAIL, following a LINK or saving a BOOKMARK. You'll also spot the words of staying safe and signed in β€” your LOGIN and PASSWORD, a COOKIE, the DOMAIN and the SERVER β€” plus the CLOUD, a NETWORK, a HASHTAG and being ONLINE.

A network of networks

The word 'internet' really means 'a network of networks' β€” millions of computers around the world all linked together so they can share information. When you open a WEBPAGE, your request zips off to a SERVER (a powerful computer that stores the site) and the page travels back to your screen, often in well under a second, even if the server is on the other side of the planet. The 'world wide web' of WEBSITES and LINKS that we browse actually sits on top of the internet β€” they're related but not quite the same thing.

Two ideas are worth knowing. The CLOUD isn't really a cloud at all β€” it just means storing your files and photos on someone else's big SERVER computers, reachable from anywhere, rather than only on your own device. And a strong PASSWORD matters because the same connection that lets you reach the whole world also lets the world reach you. The internet's vocabulary comes up in computing and online-safety lessons alike, making this a handy fit for a 'how the web works' or staying-safe-online topic.

Great for an online-safety topic

It's a great fit for an online-safety or computing lesson β€” most words are short, and Easy mode uses a small grid with no diagonals or reverse words. Play online, print a PDF pack, or use Make Your Own to build a grid from your own internet words.
