Instead, from roughly 1947 to 1991, AMERICA and the SOVIET union competed through an ARMS RACE, propaganda, spying and smaller conflicts elsewhere. Europe was split by what Winston Churchill called the IRON CURTAIN, and nowhere showed it more starkly than BERLIN, where a concrete WALL cut the city in two for 28 years, families divided overnight.
The TENSION peaked in 1962, when the discovery of Soviet missiles in CUBA brought the world about as close to nuclear war as it has ever come — defused after a tense fortnight of negotiation. The rivalry also drove the Space Race: the SOVIET union launched the first SATELLITE, Sputnik, and the first person into space, while AMERICA answered by landing astronauts on the Moon. The Cold War finally thawed when the BERLIN WALL came down in 1989, an event still shown in classrooms as the moment the era ended — which is why it's such a key modern-history topic.
