Inside the courtroom
Justice takes a whole team to deliver, and the words are here. The MAGISTRATE hears smaller cases, the PROSECUTOR brings the charge, and the DEFENDANT stands TRIAL. A WITNESS gives evidence, the court CLERK keeps the records, the BAILIFF keeps order, and the NOTARY and PARALEGAL handle the paperwork. Out gathering the facts is the DETECTIVE, and keeping the peace is the SHERIFF — all working towards one thing: JUSTICE.
How a trial really works
A courtroom is set up to be fair, and each job is a deliberate piece of that fairness. The big idea is that no one person decides someone's fate: the PROSECUTOR argues that the DEFENDANT is guilty, a defence LAWYER argues the other side, and an ordinary JURY of twelve members of the public — not the JUDGE — listens to all the evidence and delivers the VERDICT. The JUDGE's job is to keep the TRIAL fair and explain the law, banging the GAVEL to call for order.
In some countries the roles split in interesting ways: a SOLICITOR does the everyday legal work and prepares the case, while a BARRISTER is the specialist who actually stands up and argues in COURT. Around them, a WITNESS must swear to tell the truth, the CLERK records everything, the BAILIFF keeps order, and a DETECTIVE gathered the evidence long before anyone reached the courtroom.
