Indiana Jones was dreamed up by George Lucas and directed by Steven Spielberg as a loving tribute to the cliffhanger adventure serials they grew up watching. The first film, Raiders of the Lost Ark, arrived in 1981 with Harrison Ford as the whip-cracking, fedora-wearing professor who hunts down ancient treasures.
It became an instant classic, spawning a series — The Temple of Doom, The Last Crusade, the Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny — each sending Indy on a globe-trotting quest mixing real history, daring stunts and supernatural mystery. The character is now one of cinema's most beloved heroes.
