A true Hollywood underdog tale
Rocky was released in 1976 and is famous on screen and off as an underdog story. Sylvester Stallone, then a little-known actor, wrote the script himself and insisted on starring in it despite the odds — and the low-budget film went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.
It follows Rocky Balboa, a small-time Philadelphia boxer who gets a one-in-a-million shot at the heavyweight champion, Apollo Creed. The training run up the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps — now nicknamed the 'Rocky Steps' — and Bill Conti's anthem 'Gonna Fly Now' became cultural landmarks, and the story carried on through many sequels and the Creed spin-offs.
