Why they call it the sweet science
Boxing is one of the oldest sports of all — fighters with bound fists appear in the ancient Greek Olympics — but the modern sport runs on the Queensberry Rules, written in the 1860s, which brought in padded GLOVES, three-minute ROUNDs and a count of ten for a fighter who's down. Boxers are matched by weight, from flyweight up to heavyweight, so contests stay fair.
You can win in a few ways: by KNOCKOUT, when an opponent can't beat the count; by a technical knockout, when the REFEREE stops the BOUT; or on points, when ringside judges score each round. Because dodging and timing matter as much as punching, the great trainers nicknamed it 'the sweet science' — a clever boxer can beat a stronger one with FOOTWORK alone.
