Unlike most sports, basketball has a precise birthday. It was invented in 1891 by a teacher named James Naismith, who wanted an indoor game to keep his students active through the winter — and nailed a peach basket to the wall as the first HOOP. The game took off and grew into the NBA, now watched all over the world.
The aim is simple: get the ball through the other team's hoop, worth two points, or three from far out behind the line. Players DRIBBLE the ball as they move, look for the ASSIST or the open LAYUP, and grab the REBOUND when a shot misses — all while avoiding a FOUL or a TRAVEL call from the referee.
