How lakes form, and why they matter
A lake is a body of water surrounded by land, and most fill up in hollows scooped out long ago. The five Great Lakes of North America — the largest group of FRESHWATER lakes on Earth — were gouged out by giant glaciers during the last ice age. Russia's BAIKAL formed a different way, in a crack where the Earth's crust is slowly pulling apart, making it both the deepest and oldest lake in the world.
Lakes matter because they store drinking water, support fish and wildlife, and offer somewhere to swim and sail. People even build their own — a RESERVOIR is a man-made lake, usually held back by a dam, that supplies water to nearby towns.
