A trip around the world

The stories behind the sights
Every landmark has a tale. The EIFFEL tower was built for a world's fair in 1889 and was meant to be temporary — people thought it would be torn down. The leaning tower of PISA tilts because its foundations began sinking into soft ground while it was still being built. And the TAJ MAHAL in India is not a palace at all, but a breathtaking marble tomb built by an emperor for his beloved wife.
Many of these are 'man-made wonders' — created by people rather than nature — and several feature on lists of the world's greatest sights. They make brilliant landmarks (in every sense) for learning about the countries and cultures that built them.
