Many of these landmarks have remarkable backstories. MOUNT RUSHMORE is the faces of four US presidents — including LINCOLN and WASHINGTON — carved 18 metres tall into a granite mountain in South Dakota. ALCATRAZ was a high-security island prison in San Francisco Bay, thought to be impossible to escape. And the HOOVER Dam holds back a whole river to make electricity and water for the dry south-west.
