The FOURTH of JULY is America's birthday. On that date in 1776, leaders of the thirteen American colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, announcing that they would no longer be ruled by Britain and would become a free NATION. That bold document is why the day is all about LIBERTY and FREEDOM.
You can read the country's history in its FLAG: the fifty STARS stand for today's fifty states, while the thirteen STRIPES represent those original thirteen colonies. People have set off FIREWORKS to mark the day ever since the very first anniversary in 1777, and UNCLE SAM — the tall figure in a star-spangled hat — became a friendly stand-in for the United States itself.
