The story behind the feast
Thanksgiving traces back to 1621, when the PILGRIMS who had sailed from England on the Mayflower shared a three-day HARVEST FEAST with the Wampanoag people who had helped them survive their first hard year in America. That gathering became the model for a holiday all about gratitude, family and good food.
It didn't become a fixed national holiday until 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln set it for the autumn — today the United States celebrates on the fourth Thursday in November, while Canada holds its own Thanksgiving in October. Modern traditions have grown up around it too, from the giant balloons of the New York parade to a fridge full of LEFTOVERS the next day. The roast TURKEY has been the centrepiece for so long that the day is sometimes simply called 'Turkey Day'.
