Who was Saint Patrick?
Behind the LEPRECHAUNS and the colour GREEN is a real person. PATRICK was a Christian missionary who lived in the 5th century and became the patron saint of IRELAND. According to tradition he used the three leaves of the SHAMROCK to explain an idea to the people he taught, which is how the little plant became the day's most famous symbol. The holiday falls on 17 MARCH, the date marking his death.
What began as a quiet religious feast day has grown into a huge worldwide celebration of Irish culture. Cities far from IRELAND throw enormous PARADEs — Chicago even dyes its river bright green — and millions of people wear green, listen to CELTIC music and enjoy the festivities, whether they're Irish or not.
