Saints, poets and a Roman god
Valentine's Day takes its name from Saint Valentine, an early Christian honoured on 14 February, but its link with ROMANCE came much later. In the Middle Ages, the poet Geoffrey Chaucer and others connected the date with the idea that birds chose their mates in mid-February — and the notion of it as a day for sweethearts caught on, growing into the cards and CHOCOLATE we send today.
Some of its symbols are older still. CUPID, the chubby winged archer whose ARROW makes people fall in LOVE, comes from Roman mythology (the Greeks called him Eros), the son of the goddess of love. The HEART shape became shorthand for affection centuries ago, and Valentine's is now one of the biggest card-sending days of the whole year.
