A joyful welcome, not a scary one
Day of the Dead is celebrated on the first two days of NOVEMBER, when many families believe the SPIRITS of those who have died return to visit. Far from being gloomy, it's a warm and happy reunion: people build an OFRENDA, a special ALTAR laid with PHOTOS, candles and the favourite foods of each ANCESTOR, so they feel welcome when they come home.
The bright orange MARIGOLD is everywhere because its strong scent and colour are thought to guide the spirits along the way. The cheerful skeletons and SUGAR SKULLS show that death is treated as a natural part of life, to be remembered with a smile — and the elegant skeleton lady, La CATRINA, comes from a famous Mexican artist's drawing. It's so important that UNESCO lists the tradition as part of the world's cultural heritage.
