Two Eids and the moon that marks them
There are actually two festivals called Eid. Eid al-Fitr, the 'festival of breaking the fast', celebrates the end of the holy month when Muslims fast from dawn to sunset — our Ramadan word search covers that month in full. Eid al-Adha, the 'festival of sacrifice', comes later in the year during the time of the pilgrimage to Mecca.
Because the Islamic calendar follows the moon, Eid begins with the sighting of a thin new CRESCENT MOON, so its date shifts earlier each year. The day usually starts with a special prayer and a SERMON at the mosque, followed by a FEAST, new CLOTHES, a VISIT to family and giving to those in need — and the warm greeting 'EID MUBARAK', which means 'blessed Eid'.
