A celebration of heritage
Kwanzaa honours African-American CULTURE and HERITAGE over SEVEN nights, and this word search gathers its traditions. You'll track down the centrepiece โ the KINARA candle holder and its red, green and BLACK CANDLES โ set on the woven MKEKA mat with the MAZAO harvest crops and an ear of CORN.
Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the list, so the celebration changes every time you play โ gentle on Easy, and a Hard-mode challenge once the diagonals and backwards words appear.
Seven principles, one community
Kwanzaa is built on seven guiding PRINCIPLES, and the words are here. It celebrates UNITY, FAITH and FAMILY, draws on AFRICA and the SWAHILI language, and centres on the harvest. The colours are RED, GREEN and BLACK; the festival ends with the great KARAMU feast and the giving of GIFTS โ a joyful time for the whole COMMUNITY.
A young holiday with deep roots
Kwanzaa is one of the newest holidays on the calendar, created in 1966 by Dr Maulana Karenga to give African Americans a way to celebrate their shared CULTURE and HERITAGE. Its name comes from a SWAHILI phrase, 'matunda ya kwanza', meaning 'first fruits', linking it to age-old African harvest festivals. It runs for SEVEN nights, from 26 December to 1 January.
Each of those nights focuses on one of the seven PRINCIPLES โ beginning with UNITY โ and a candle is lit on the KINARA to mark it. Kwanzaa is a cultural celebration rather than a religious one, so it can be enjoyed alongside other festivals, and many families mark it with storytelling, music, the KARAMU feast and the giving of meaningful GIFTS.
