New Year Word Search

Three, two, one โ€” Happy New Year! Our New Year word search hides the magic of midnight, from booming FIREWORKS to the final COUNTDOWN, in a grid of letters. Pick a difficulty and ring in the new year.

Ringing in the new year

New Year's Eve is a worldwide celebration, and this word search gathers its sparkle. You'll track down the big moment โ€” the COUNTDOWN to MIDNIGHT, the BALL DROP, the FIREWORKS overhead and the CONFETTI raining down as the BELLS ring TWELVE.

Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the list, so the party changes every time you play โ€” gentle on Easy, and a Hard-mode countdown once the diagonals and backwards words appear.

Out with the old

Every New Year is a fresh start, and the traditions are here. Make a RESOLUTION, raise a TOAST with a CHEERS, blow the HORNS and light a SPARKLER, and send your WISHES for the year ahead. There's the PARTY in full swing, the silly HATS, the STREAMERS and GLITTER, the CALENDAR turning to JANUARY, and the EVE that started it all.

Why we celebrate on 1 January

Our JANUARY new year comes from the ancient Romans. They named the month after Janus, a god shown with two faces โ€” one looking back at the year gone and one forward to the year ahead โ€” which is exactly the spirit of the holiday. Not everyone marks it on the same day, though: the Chinese, Jewish, Islamic and many other calendars each ring in their new year at different times.

The custom of making a RESOLUTION is thousands of years old, going back to the Babylonians who made promises to start the year well. Today's traditions are newer: New York's famous Times Square BALL DROP began in 1907, and now FIREWORKS light up city skies from Sydney to London as each time zone counts down to MIDNIGHT in turn.

A fun January activity

It's a great fit for a 'fresh start' or calendar lesson back at school in January โ€” Easy mode keeps the grid small with no diagonals or reverse words. Play online, print a PDF pack, or use our Make Your Own tool to build a grid from your own New Year words and resolutions.
