The studio that made computers cry
Pixar began as the computer-graphics division of Lucasfilm before Steve Jobs bought it in 1986 and turned it into its own studio (its logo is the little hopping desk lamp, Luxo Jr). In 1995 it released TOY STORY — the very first feature film made entirely with computer animation — and changed the movies forever.
A run of hits followed, from MONSTERS Inc and Finding NEMO to The INCREDIBLES, RATATOUILLE, WALL-E, UP, INSIDE OUT and COCO. Disney bought Pixar in 2006, but the studio kept its trademark: clever, heartfelt stories (and the occasional good cry) that work just as well for grown-ups as for kids.
Films the whole family agrees on
Pixar is rare common ground — toddlers and parents both leave happy, and occasionally a little weepy. It's a lovely shared activity and a sneaky vocabulary builder for younger fans, spanning everything from CARS and BRAVE to LUCA, ONWARD, LIGHTYEAR, ELEMENTAL and TURNING RED.
