From street racing to global stunts
The series began in 2001 with The Fast and the Furious, a fairly small film about undercover cops and illegal street racing in Los Angeles, starring Vin Diesel as Dom Toretto and the late Paul Walker as Brian. Almost nobody expected what it would become.
Over more than ten films it grew into one of the highest-grossing franchises in history, swapping quarter-mile drag races for ever more outrageous globe-trotting heists and gravity-defying stunts. Through it all runs its famous theme — loyalty and 'family' — which became the saga's much-quoted heart and soul.
