The twist is that, while plotting to steal the Moon, Gru adopts three little girls — and slowly discovers he'd rather be their dad than the world's greatest villain.
The breakout stars, though, were the Minions: the babbling, banana-obsessed yellow helpers who speak their own nonsense language. They became such a phenomenon that they earned their own spin-off movies, turning Despicable Me into one of the most successful animated franchises ever.
