Rainforest, mountains and ancient empires
South America is home to two of the planet's natural superlatives. The AMAZON is the world's largest rainforest — so vast and full of plants that it's sometimes called the 'lungs of the planet' — and the ANDES is the longest mountain range on land, running almost the whole length of the continent.
Its history runs deep, too. The INCA built a great empire high in the Andes, centred on the city of CUSCO, and their QUECHUA language is still spoken today. Most South Americans speak Spanish, except in BRAZIL — the continent's biggest country — where the language is Portuguese.
