North America is dominated by three huge mainland countries — CANADA (the world's second-largest by area), the USA and MEXICO — which together stretch from the Arctic almost to the equator. But the continent has many more nations than people often realise: a string of small countries through Central America, and dozens of island states dotted across the CARIBBEAN.
That makes it a real mix of languages and cultures: English and French in CANADA, Spanish across MEXICO and Central America, and a colourful blend on the Caribbean islands. From snowy GREENLAND to sun-baked BELIZE, it's a continent of huge contrasts.
