Reading a map
Knowing how to read a map is a skill for life, and this word search gathers the basics. You'll track down the parts of a map — the LEGEND and KEY that explain the SYMBOLS, the SCALE that shows distance, and the GRID that helps you find a spot.

Finding your way
Once you can read a map, you can navigate the world. Learn the four points — NORTH, SOUTH, EAST and WEST — and how a COMPASS and a BEARING keep you on ROUTE. Master the lines that wrap the globe, the EQUATOR with LATITUDE and LONGITUDE, find a place by its COORDINATE, and use the ATLAS and GLOBE to see how every BORDER and DIRECTION fits together — then PLOT your own.
What every map needs
Almost every good map shares a few key tools, and they're all in this puzzle. A KEY or LEGEND explains what the little SYMBOLS mean (a tree for a wood, a cross for a church). A SCALE tells you how a small distance on paper matches a big distance in the real world. A COMPASS or north arrow shows which way is up, and a GRID of numbered squares lets you give any spot an exact COORDINATE.
Some maps add CONTOUR lines — wavy loops that join places of the same height, so you can 'see' hills and valleys on flat paper. Put these tools together and a map becomes a powerful way to find your way anywhere on Earth.
