From sidewalk surfing to the Olympics
Skateboarding was born in 1950s and 60s California, when surfers wanted something to ride when the waves were flat — they bolted roller-skate wheels to wooden boards and called it 'sidewalk surfing'. For years it stayed a street pastime, until one trick changed everything: the OLLIE, invented in the late 1970s, let skaters pop the board into the air with their feet and jump with it, unlocking flips, GRINDs and rail slides.
From there the sport exploded, with its own parks, styles and culture — street skating on steps and RAILs, and ramp skating in the BOWL and HALFPIPE. Skateboarding has since gone fully mainstream, even joining the Olympic Games in 2020. Riders who lead with the left foot skate 'regular'; those who lead with the right ride GOOFY.
