The Olympics are the oldest sporting event of all. The first games were held nearly 2,800 years ago in Olympia, ancient Greece, in honour of the gods. They faded away for centuries before being revived as the modern Olympics in 1896, and now the Summer and Winter Games are held every four years, with thousands of athletes from almost every country.
The famous symbols carry meaning too: the five interlocking RINGS stand for the five inhabited continents coming together, and the Olympic FLAME is lit in Greece and carried to the host city by a TORCH RELAY. Athletes compete for a GOLD, SILVER or BRONZE MEDAL on the PODIUM.
