How a circuit really works
Electric CURRENT is simply a flow of tiny ELECTRONs, and for it to flow it needs a complete loop called a CIRCUIT. The BATTERY acts like a pump, its VOLTAGE pushing the electrons round the WIRE to light a BULB β and a SWITCH works by breaking or closing that loop. The electrons flow easily through a CONDUCTOR like metal, but an INSULATOR such as plastic or rubber blocks them, which is exactly why wires are wrapped in plastic to keep us safe.
The real surprise is that electricity and magnetism are deeply linked. About two hundred years ago scientists discovered that an electric current creates a MAGNET field around it, and that moving a magnet near a wire pushes a current along it. That single idea powers the modern world: it's how a GENERATOR makes electricity in a power station, and how electric motors spin in everything from toys to trains.
