Light & Sound Word Search

Two kinds of WAVE, one fun puzzle. Our light and sound word search hides the science of what we see and hear, from a bending RAY of LIGHT to a booming ECHO, in a grid of letters. Pick a difficulty and tune in.

Seeing the light

Light is a wave we can see, and this word search gathers how it behaves. You'll track down the words of optics β€” the RAY and BEAM of LIGHT, the way it bounces in REFLECTION off a MIRROR and bends in REFRACTION through a LENS or PRISM β€” splitting into the SPECTRUM of a RAINBOW.

Each puzzle pulls a fresh selection from the list, so the grid changes every time you play β€” gentle on Easy, and a Hard-mode challenge once the diagonals and backwards words appear.

Hearing the sound

Sound is a wave too, and the words are here. It starts with a VIBRATION that travels as a WAVE, with a FREQUENCY we hear as PITCH and an AMPLITUDE we hear as VOLUME, measured in DECIBELs. There's the ECHO that bounces back, the SHADOW where light can't reach, and the BRIGHT COLOUR that light creates.

A race light always wins

Light and sound are both waves, but they could hardly be more different. LIGHT is astonishingly fast β€” about 300,000 kilometres every second β€” and travels in straight RAYs, even racing across the emptiness of space from the Sun. Sound is far slower and, unlike light, needs something to travel through (air, water or solids), which is why space is completely silent.

You can see the race for yourself in a thunderstorm: the flash arrives almost instantly while the rumble lags behind. Light shows off its tricks too β€” it bounces off a MIRROR in REFLECTION, bends through a LENS or PRISM in REFRACTION, and that bending is what splits white light into the SPECTRUM of a RAINBOW. Sound, meanwhile, is all about VIBRATION: fast vibrations make a high PITCH, big ones make a loud VOLUME, and a wave bouncing off a far wall returns as an ECHO.

Great for a topic on waves

It pairs perfectly with a science lesson on light and sound waves β€” Easy mode keeps the grid small with no diagonals or reverse words. Play online, print a PDF pack, or use our Make Your Own tool to build a grid from your own science terms.

Frequently asked questions

What's in the light & sound word search?

The science of waves β€” light's reflection, refraction, prisms and the spectrum, plus sound's vibration, frequency, pitch and decibels. Each puzzle uses a fresh mix.

Does it cover both light and sound?

Both β€” light's REFLECTION, REFRACTION, PRISM and SPECTRUM, plus sound's VIBRATION, FREQUENCY, PITCH and DECIBELS.

Is it good for a topic on waves?

Great fit β€” pair it with a science lesson on light and sound waves. Easy mode keeps the grid small with no diagonals or reverse words.

How to play

Drag across a word, or tap its first and last letter β€” both work. Each word you find locks in with its own colour and ticks off the list, so you always know what's left to find.

Want a tougher challenge? Switch to Medium or Hard for a bigger grid with diagonal and reverse words. Stuck on one? Tap Hint for a nudge, or Solve to reveal the whole grid β€” and hit New any time for a completely fresh puzzle.
