How rocks form and change
Rocks are always changing, and the words are here. Some are IGNEOUS, born from MAGMA and LAVA that cools into BASALT, OBSIDIAN or PUMICE; others build up from SEDIMENT layer by layer. EROSION wears them down, a MINERAL crust lines a hollow GEODE, and deep down lies the solid BEDROCK. We've even hidden a FOSSIL and a giant BOULDER for sharp-eyed geologists.
Three kinds of rock
Geologists sort every rock into three families by how it formed. IGNEOUS rock cools and hardens from molten MAGMA or LAVA — fast-cooling LAVA makes glassy OBSIDIAN or bubbly PUMICE, while slow-cooling magma deep underground makes speckled GRANITE. Sedimentary rock, like SANDSTONE and LIMESTONE, builds up as layers of SEDIMENT are squashed together over millions of years, which is why it so often holds a FOSSIL.
The third family, metamorphic rock, is made when heat and pressure transform an existing rock into something new: squeeze LIMESTONE and it becomes MARBLE; squeeze mudstone and it becomes SLATE. Amazingly, these three types keep turning into one another in a slow loop called the rock cycle. Rocks themselves are made of MINERALs — natural CRYSTALs like QUARTZ — and the rarest, hardest and most sparkling of all is the DIAMOND.
