The big ideas of life
One of the most important ideas in all of science is that every living thing is made of CELLs. Some ORGANISMs, like the AMOEBA, are a single cell; others, like you, are made of trillions, organised into TISSUE, ORGANs and whole body systems. Inside almost every cell is a NUCLEUS holding the instructions for building and running that creature.
Those instructions are written in DNA, coiled into CHROMOSOMEs — the complete set is called the GENOME — and passed from parents to offspring, which is the heart of GENETICS. Over countless generations, tiny differences add up through EVOLUTION, the process Charles Darwin described, slowly shaping the millions of SPECIES alive today. And ECOLOGY studies how all those living things depend on one another and on their HABITAT, from the smallest BACTERIA to the largest VERTEBRATE.
