Dinosaurs ruled the Earth for an astonishing 165 million years — far, far longer than humans have been around — across the time geologists call the Triassic, JURASSIC and Cretaceous periods. They came in every size, from chicken-sized hunters to the colossal DIPLODOCUS, longer than three buses end to end. Some were a plant-eating HERBIVORE like TRICERATOPS; others a fearsome meat-eating CARNIVORE like the T-REX.
Almost all of them vanished around 66 million years ago, most likely after a giant ASTEROID struck the Earth and changed the climate — which is why we call them EXTINCT. Everything we know comes from the FOSSIL bones, eggs and footprints they left behind, slowly turned to stone and dug up by scientists. And here's the twist: many scientists agree that birds are living dinosaurs, so the sparrow in your garden is a distant cousin of the T-REX.
